Yogini Ekadashi Vrat Katha
According to ancient Hindu mythology, a long time ago, there was a magnificent city called Alakapuri, where Kubera, the god of wealth, reigned. Kubera was a devout devotee of Lord Shiva, and every day he would go to Nandana Van to gather flowers and offer them to a Shivling during his daily worship.
In his service was a Gandharva named Hemamali, whose duty was to bring fresh flowers from Nandana Van for Kubera’s daily puja. Hemamali was very handsome and was married to a beautiful apsara. One day, instead of fulfilling his responsibility, Hemamali became engrossed in sensual pleasures with his wife and failed to deliver the flowers on time. Meanwhile, Kubera was waiting to perform his worship and became enraged when the flowers did not arrive.
Hemamali was summoned, and when Kubera learned of his negligence, he cursed him in fury: “You sinner! You have abandoned your duty and succumbed to lust. Go suffer in the mortal world, afflicted with leprosy!”
Because of this curse, Hemamali was expelled from heaven and fell to Mrityuloka (the earthly realm), where he was afflicted with leprosy and lived in great misery. He wandered aimlessly through the Himalayas, suffering intensely, until one day he reached the ashram of Sage Markandeya. Seeing his wretched condition, Sage Markandeya asked him the reason behind his suffering. Hemamali humbly narrated the entire story—his negligence, Kubera’s curse, and his current suffering.
Moved by compassion, Sage Markandeya said: “O Gandharva, there is only one way to attain redemption. Observe the fast of Yogini Ekadashi, which falls during the Krishna Paksha of the month of Ashadha. If you follow the rituals with full devotion, you will be freed from your disease and regain your place in heaven.”
Following the sage’s advice, Hemamali observed the Yogini Ekadashi fast with full devotion and sincerity. As a result of the power of this sacred fast, his body was cured of leprosy, and he was transformed back into his divine form. Eventually, he returned to Swarga (heaven), and all his sins were destroyed.
Sage Markandeya emphasized that Yogini Ekadashi is so powerful that it destroys all sins, grants relief from physical ailments, and ultimately leads to moksha (liberation). This story highlights the immense significance and spiritual potency of the Yogini Ekadashi vrat, making it one of the most revered Ekadashis in Hindu tradition.
