Ashadha Amavasya 2025: Vrat Katha
According to a Puranic legend, in ancient times, there lived a learned Brahmin named Sumati in the city of Vidhishil. He was deeply devoted, virtuous, and lived a disciplined life, dedicating himself to celibacy, penance, rituals, and charitable acts. However, he had one major flaw — he never performed Shraddha or Tarpan. He believed that ancestors had no real existence and considered all such practices to be baseless myths.
One night, Sumati had a dream in which he saw his ancestors in deep sorrow. They were lying in a desolate, waterless place, crying out for help. Again and again, they pleaded, “O Sumati! You are a virtuous soul, but you have never performed Tarpan for us. Because of this, we are thirsty, hungry, and suffering greatly.”
Shaken by the dream, Sumati woke up in distress. The next morning, he went to a wise sage and narrated his dream. The sage replied, “O Brahmin! This is not a delusion. Your ancestors’ souls are truly in pain. Your life will only become meaningful when you perform their Shraddha and Tarpan. The most auspicious day to do this is Ashadha Amavasya. On this day, performing the rites with devotion and proper rituals brings peace to the ancestors and their blessings to you.”
Taking the sage’s advice to heart, Sumati bathed in the holy Ganga Jal on Ashadha Amavasya, and with full rituals, he offered Shraddha and Tarpan to his ancestors. He also fed Brahmins, donated clothes, and engaged in gau-seva. That very night, Sumati had another dream where his ancestors appeared in a divine form and said, “O dear son! Today you have satisfied us. We now reside in heaven and bless you that your descendants will live long, be happy, and remain righteous.”
From that day onward, Sumati began performing Shraddha on every Amavasya and also encouraged others to observe Tarpan especially on Ashadha Amavasya, spreading awareness about its deep significance.
